Here’s a first look at a new MID that’s about to hit the market. There’s a lot of talk around about the MID category, but as we’re trying to prove with our MID Hunter challenge, you don’t often see them in the wild. That might be about to change if this sub-USD300 device is anything to go by.

The INKIA 500 is powered by an Intel Atom ULV Z510 processor, and Intel US15W chipset. It features a 5-inch LCD touch screen supporting 800x480 resolution, supports up to 1GB DDR2 RAM, and has a 16GB SSD.

For connectivity it has 2 USB ports, 1 TF card slot, and supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and optional 3G or GPS modules. A 0.3mp camera is on the left top of the screen, and at the right side, there’s an optical track point; speakers are placed down both sides.

The backside houses a removable battery which is a 2-cell 1900mAh unit, more than enough to support a 5-inch MID.

Size-wise it measures 165mmx95mmx25mm, and weighs only 360g. As you can see, compared to the PSP below it’s about the same length, slightly wider but with a much bigger screen.

Western Opportunity Analysis:

Expect the market for MIDs to begin to grow with the appearance of devices like the INKIA 500. Customers are excited by the MID category because of its functionality and super portable form factor, but so far the pricing has been such that consumers have been wary of picking them up. At the same time, ARM-based MIDs still lack the computing and application performance to really drive growth. This x86-based MID for under USD300 could well signal the beginning of the true MID era.

Conclusions:

A nice product. What it lacks in sleek design it makes up for with usability and price. If you’re interested in MID devices, this is well worth a look.
