A lot of consumers are still coming to terms with how an iPad can be used. For many it’s an entertainment hub, for others, an RSS reader, an e-book reader or a notebook replacement. There are many ways to use a tablet device and we’re starting to see some more interesting ones in America, Australia, etc. Asian countries like India are yet to see an official iPad launch, but there are other competitive companies like Notion Ink and iProf who are all set to roll out their tablet in the Indian market, with some innovative vertical marketing concepts.
Before we talk about vertical markets for tablets in India, let’s have a quick look how tablets, especially iPad, are influencing some unique and particular markets. In Australia, a well-known restaurant owner has turned his restaurant’s food and bar menus into an iPad-friendly format. In another instance, an Australian airline is planning to offer iPads to their flyers for a small additional fee. These business strategies show how different markets are making use of the iPad. It’s fascinating to see how the iPad has carved out these extra vertical markets for itself, even without any marketing effort directed to those markets by Apple.

In India, iProf is specifically targeting the Indian education market. iProf tablets are not available in the market for sale, instead only students enrolling for their competitive programs will be eligible to get one. iProf’s dream is to revolutionize the way Indian students study. Their courses and study material are available in multiple formats such as audio-video lectures, animations, structured tests, assessment tests solutions, performance analysis etc. The company has been constantly trying to spread its franchises across the country.
The founders of Notion Ink on the other hand believe that their tablet, Adam, will sell both within and out of India. They were in touch with some big publication media firms in the US and they tried to convince them of the usability of their product. Notion Ink’s CEO, Rohan Shrava says that “We will target the publishing industry first because it has not changed for over many hundred years. It is time for some radical change in that area and we want to play a significant role in this revolution.” - thestatesman.com.

The Adam was scheduled for launch in June or July in the US market but according to recent updates that’s been delayed till Thanksgiving. Since the US launch is delayed; the company is now preparing to roll Adam out into the Indian market first.
The latest buzz in the Indian market is that the country’s largest private sector conglomerate company, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), is eyeing the Indian tablet PC market. It’s said that RIL is in talks to invest in Notion Ink to help the startup launch their Adam in the Indian and global markets. It’s a good sign, not only for Notion Ink, but also for other companies who believe in the market potential of the tablet species.
