CULV743-2
It’s no secret that Intel would prefer its customers to focus more on CULV-based products and less on the lower margin Atom netbooks. As more and more big brand OEMs start to turn out CULV notebooks, we’re starting to see the shanzhai players position themselves to make a move on this market segment. Here’s an intro to a couple of new shanzhai CULV devices from iTTD that are about to hit the market.

The first notebook is an 11.6” device that uses a single core Celeron 743 processor inside an ABS plastic shell with an Apple-like chiclet keyboard.

Western Opportunity Analysis:

While the low-end Atom market isn’t particularly appealing to Intel, it’s still profitable and it’s unlikely to give it up and allow rival VIA to flourish in the segment. Still, it’s clear that Intel’s marketing push will be largely behind CULV and their famous ability to influence their customers will likely see a slew of the more expensive CULV notebooks arrive on the market (even the entry-level CULV-based notebooks are USD 200-300 more expensive than Atom netbooks).

Shanzhai manufacturers know that consumers want cheap versions of the latest hot devices on the market (hence the popularity of iPhone clones, Mac Air clones, etc) so of course they’re going to see this as a new opportunity. Just how available the CULV components are to the smaller Shenzhen players, and just how cheaply they can make the new devices remains to be seen, but from what we have heard, several of the more established shanzhai companies are working on their own CULV product lines now and expect to introduce them before Christmas or early into the new year.

Conclusions:

No word on pricing for the two iTTD models detailed above, although you can guarantee that they’ll be cheaper than comparably spec’d CULV products available from brand OEMs. More details as they come to hand.
