11.1" Macbook Air clone gets unboxed and benchmarked

Here we have an article from our colleagues over on ShanzhaiBen.com who have gone to extreme lengths to investigate the latest Macbook Air clone from renowned shanzhai manufacturer Caszh. This 11.1 inch device basically has the guts of a regular netbook squeezed in to a slimmer, Air-ish chassis. Benchmarks however prove that it does slightly better than expected.

As far as netbooks are concerned the trend toward fuller, larger products is continuing, even in mainstream, where we are seeing ten inches and above become the norm. The Caszh device here is known, at least to the customers of Shanzhen's busy markets, as the 'Xiao Bai', which translates as little white, or whitey if you prefer. Without exhausting the topic of Chinese political correctness, the general concept is one of a clean, slim and elegant design, which is actually in keeping with Caszh's growing reputation as a maker of quality products.

Here we can see inside the packaging. The 1.5 inch thick chassis makes a regular VGA port and Ethernet port impossible, hence the USB adapters. Not a big deal when you're mobile, but on a desk you may feel the need for a USB hub.

Certainly the finish on the chassis looks professional and robust, and on the surface generally you'll notice a decent quality chiclet keyboard, good quality bright screen. Check out the pics below for a quick tour of the device.

Here we can see just how bright the16:9,  11.1", 1366x768 backlit screen performs. Caszh assure us it's a top tier display and I'd have to agree. Pretty solid.

Just in case we're still fazed by the Intel Menlow platform, here is CPUZ revealing all.

Here are some important images. According to laptop magazine, the average score in PCMArk 05 for a Menlow based netbook product is 1,423; here we can see the Caszh does slightly better than that, coming in at 1,503 points. Not blistering, but at least it's in keeping with a top tier effort.

Tests using BatteryMark estimate you're getting around 1hr 45 mins on a charge. Far from brilliant, but then again it is only a 3 cell and it does have a large bright screen.

Finally, we see some 720p video action. Playing the movie "Twilight of the City" the Atom CPU remains at a steady 70-80%.

Overall these benchmarks confirm claims that Caszh are producing products that can compete with Western branded products, which we can take as a litmus test for the shanzhai netbook standard as a whole. Nice device. Can I have one in black please?

Yeah, I should have mentioned that the weight is 1.1kg, which lighter than the Macbook Air by about 250 grams.

The chipset is Intel's 945GSE and is used on just about every Atom-based netbook ever. I'm sure any hacker worth his salt'd be able to get OS X up and running on this very ubiquitous platform.

Hi there,
Can anyone supply me with contact details for Caszh please? I would be seriously interested in importing some of their machines to the UK.
Regards,
David
