Based on Linux, the GP2X Wiz (nice name!) is a completely open multi-functional handheld entertainment device. The makers, GamePark Holding from Korea, say it’s different than other
shanzhai video game consoles in that it uses a completely “open source” approach. Supposed to be released in late 2008 with a retail price of USD 179.99, there have been massive delays and troubles with the company, but now, finally, it is apparently ready to go.
With games developed by companies, online groups and users themselves and then shared via the network, the content portion of the concept sounds pretty good. Just how good these new games and emulations are to play on the Wiz remains to be seen.
Conclusions:
Certainly, as Apple has proven with its Apps store, great content and cheap or free prices can make up for a multitude of hardware sins and keep a product selling well. If the idea catches on, we could well be seeing more open source devices like the Wiz. And once the shanzhai companies get in on the act you’ll see prices much lower than the USD 179.99 this is expected to sell for.
